Things to do

golf

Visit one of Sun Valley Resort’s three golf courses: Trail Creek, Elkhorn, or the

9-hole White Clouds course.

Ketchum’s Bigwood Golf Course: A walkable 9-hole course featuring mountain views, is another favorite that’s great for all skill levels.

hiking

Scenic Overlook via Bald Mountain Trail: Start at River Run Lodge and hike up about 1.5 miles to the scenic overlook. This mostly shaded trail opens up to views of town, the Big Wood River, and surrounding mountains. It is a moderate hike that takes about 2 hours round-trip.

Bald Mountain Trail: For those wanting to take on more! After stopping at the overlook, continue up the Bald Mountain Trail to the top of Baldy. This 5.2-mile hike features views of rivers, wildflowers, and the Sawtooth, Pioneer, and Boulder Mountain ranges. At the top, there is access to Lookout Lodge, picnic tables, and Adirondack chairs. When you’re ready to return, you can ride the Christmas chairlift and Roundhouse gondola back down. This hike has been a special tradition for Anna and her dad.

Pioneer Cabin Trail: This iconic Sun Valley adventure climbs over 23 switchbacks, 2,300 vertical feet, and about 7.5 miles up and back to reach the famous Pioneer Cabin, which bears the memorable phrase “the higher you get, the higher you get.” This hike has great views and takes about 5 hours.

Aspen Loop Trail: This relatively flat two-mile hike offers views and a walk through a meadow of flowers and grasses. Accessible from the Hemingway or Trail Creek Trailheads, it is a trail the Basnaws have done many times over the last 20 years.

Galena (bike, dine, picnic): Galena Lodge is a 30-minute drive North of Ketchum and offers a large trail network for bikers and hikers alike. Pack a picnic to savor outside the lodge, or better yet, enjoy Galena’s delicious lunch menu, craft beers, and iconic cookies.

Fly Fishing

Silver Creek Outfitters: Book a guided tour taught by Jim Sommercorn, is designed to give the novice angler a basic knowledge of fly fishing while making memories and experiencing the outdoors.

Sun Valley Outfitters: The Wood River Valley offers some of the best fly-fishing in the Lower 48. Guided half-day, three-quarter-day, and full-day trips are available for anglers of all skill levels.
